Chiropractic FAQ
What can I expect at my first appointment?
Your first visit is about slowing down, feeling heard, and aligning together. We’ll begin by reviewing your health history and your goals for care. From there, I’ll do a physical exam to understand how your body is holding tension and where it’s asking for support. We’ll talk through your options, make sure all your questions are answered, and then we’ll begin. Your first appointment includes hands-on structural bodywork along with an introductory breathwork session to help your nervous system settle and receive the work more fully.
Why don’t you work with insurance companies anymore?
After 15 years working deep within the healthcare system, Dr. Lula made the decision to opt out. You can learn more about that decision by reading here. Short version: The insurance model prioritizes speed, codes, and limitations over presence and personalized care. Working outside of that system allows me to listen more deeply and offer care that’s responsive to your body. Buh Bye!
Once I start, will I have to keep coming forever?
Absolutely not. How long you choose to receive care is always up to you, and we’ll decide together what feels most supportive. In more acute situations, weekly visits for a short period (typically 3–6 sessions) can help things resolve more quickly. Many people then transition to less frequent care to prevent old patterns from returning and to stay ahead of new issues. Think of this as maintenance, not dependency. There’s no one-size-fits-all plan here.
Is chiropractic care safe?
Yes. Chiropractic care is very safe for most people. When side effects occur, they are typically mild and temporary, such as soreness or fatigue, as your body integrates the work. There are certain conditions where adjustments are not appropriate. Dr. Lula is trained to recognize when chiropractic care is helpful and, just as importantly, when it’s not. Your safety is always my top priority.
What about neck adjustments?
Some people feel nervous about neck adjustments because they’ve heard about a risk of stroke. While that concern is understandable, research has shown no causal link between chiropractic neck adjustments and stroke. Read this NIH Study. That said, your comfort matters deeply. Dr. Lula offers multiple gentle techniques, and we’ll always choose an approach that feels right for your body. There is never a one-size-fits-all adjustment here.
What makes the “crack” sound?
The cracking sound known as a 'cavitation' comes from a rapid change in pressure within the joint capsule. It’s not bones grinding or cracking together. Dr. Lula also offer several low-force techniques that don’t create this sound, including Drop Table, Activator Method, and Craniosacral Therapy. These approaches are used based on your condition and your body’s preferences.
Breathwork FAQ
What is breathwork?
Breathwork is a broad term that refers to a variety of intentional breathing techniques used to support physical, emotional, and nervous system health. The style Dr. Lula practices is a form of conscious, connected breathing called Breathwave. Conscious, connected breathing entered Western awareness through Leonard Orr and has since evolved into many expressions, including Rebirthing Breath, Holotropic Breathwork, and Transformational Breath. Breathwave was developed by Dr. Lula’s teacher, Robin Clements, drawing from his extensive study of Transformational Breath and decades of facilitation experience.
How is Breathwave different from other breathwork practices?
Breathwave is distinct from other conscious, connected breathing styles in several important ways. It is a gentle, integrative approach designed to meet you where you are, rather than push you into a non-ordinary or cathartic state. Instead of trying to take you “somewhere else,” Breathwave invites you more deeply into yourself in the present moment, supporting awareness and integration that carries into everyday life.
Breathwave facilitators are also trained in specific hands-on bodywork techniques that help illuminate areas where breath may be restricted. This gentle, supportive touch can deepen awareness, regulation, and connection to your body.
In addition, Breathwave is held within a ceremonial container. Through years of sitting in ceremony with Indigenous communities in Mexico and Vancouver Island, Robin Clements brought a reverent, intentional framework to the practice honoring the shared human journey of living as spirit in a body.
What can I expect in a Breathwave session?
Your Breathwave session will begin with grounding into the present moment and setting an intention. You will be lying down or comfortably propped in a relaxed position. Throughout the session, Dr. Lula may use intentional music, supportive verbal guidance, and gentle touch to support your process. You will be guided into the Breathwave breathing pattern for 20–60 minutes, depending on your needs. The intention is to support a full, natural respiratory breath while creating a safe, nurturing space for your nervous system to unwind, integrate, and reconnect.
Is breathwork safe during pregnancy?
Yes. Breathwork and chiropractic care are both safe and supportive during pregnancy. Gentle modifications are made to ensure comfort and safety for both mother and baby. These practices can support a healthy pregnancy, smoother delivery, and overall well-being throughout this transformative time.
Are there people who should not practice breathwork?
If you are currently experiencing an acute mental health crisis, breathwork may not be appropriate at this time. Certain medical or mental health conditions may also be contraindicated for this work. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Dr. Lula prior to scheduling so we can determine the most supportive path forward for you.
